Summary of Lecture | Research on the industry value chain is an important field of industrial innovation and competitiveness analysis. However, it has been quite difficult for a long time because of the lack of in-depth statistics and inter-firm business information in Korea. Recently, it becomes quite feasible, mainly because of two reasons. One is a rapidly developing database system about Korean companies. Mainly two special firms (NICE, KED Korea) in the private sector have provided this. The other reason is a community-level effort to make an industry map with the cooperation between government-supported agencies and industrial intermediate organizations. These two new trends help us to open a new in-depth analysis of the industry value chain and firm’s growth, finding many new facts that have hardly been investigated. In this class, students and I will try to apply Company DB to make the industry map and analyze the evolutionary path or patterns of industry growth in Korea. Battery and Fuel Cell, LCD/OLED, or IoT Service industry may be included in this study. Students are required to cooperate and present their reports as a team in the class. Manipulation capability of Excel and searching activities about foreign company’s profile including Japan, China is also required for the students. A significant portion of the course ITM664 will consist of history, classification, analytic framework, and case studies regarding the topics in each lecture. Especially, the course will focus on studying value chain structure and firm/industrial data and the industrial relationship between maker and supplier with a more advanced classification frame of the value chain. |
